NYSCAI is looking for volunteers to join us for Legislative Education Day (LED) this February in Albany, NY! 

If you are interested in volunteering, please complete the interest form below by January 6th. We will also be hosting a virtual LED Volunteer Info Session on January 15th at 9:00 AM to provide more details about the day. Hope you can join us!

NYS Primary Care Asthma Preceptorship (PCAP) Program


The NYS Primary Care Asthma Preceptorship (PCAP) program is looking for Primary Care Providers (PCPs) to participate in an immersive, one-on-one, hands-on training in treating patients with asthma. The PCAP program aims to strengthen PCPs' expertise in delivering guidelines-based asthma care to children and families across New York State. The training objectives include Accurate Diagnosis of Asthma, Asthma Management, Accurate Use of Spirometry, and Environmental Factors. The training is open to MDs, DOs, NPs, and PAs. Each PCAP participant receives a $400 stipend, a certificate of completion, and a toolkit which includes a bronchus lung model, placebo inhaler, spacer, and resource binder. 

There are currently 9 trained PCAP Preceptors available to host participants in the following regions:

  • Hudson Valley (4)
    • Boston Children’s Health Physicians
  • Central NY (1)
    • SUNY Upstate Medical University: Upstate Pediatrics and Adolescent Center
  • Western NY (2)
    • University of Rochester Medical Center and University of Rochester Allergy and Immunology
  • Long Island (1)
    • Cohens Children’s General Pediatrics
  • New York City (1)
    • New York Presbyterian Queens Pediatric Asthma Center

NYSCAI Highlights

NYCAN Fall 2025 Convention
On December 4th, the NYSCAI team attended the New York City Asthma Network (NYCAN) Fall 2025 Convention. We joined over 10 organizations from across New York State to discuss current asthma trends, share resources, and strengthen partnerships to improve asthma care statewide. Our team also had the honor of moderating a Social Care Network (SCN) Panel featuring representatives from Staten Island Performing Provider System, Public Health Solutions, AIRnyc, and Make the Road New York, all of whom are leading efforts to expand asthma remediation services under the New York Health Equity Reform (NYHER) 1115 Medicaid Waiver Amendment.

Thank you to Make the Road New York for hosting us, as well as to our panelists for sharing the impactful work you are doing under NYHER to improve home environments and asthma-related health outcomes. We're grateful to be part of the NYCAN network and to collaborate with so many dedicated organizations working to support families with asthma across New York State.

Home-Based Asthma Services Training
Thank you to the NYS Children's Environmental Health Centers at Mount Sinai for hosting our Home-Based Asthma Services (HBAS) training on December 8th and 9th. We were excited to have seventeen Community Health Workers complete the training! Our HBAS training, taught by a Certified Asthma Educator Specialist (AE-C), provides guidelines-based asthma training on delivering asthma self-management education and identifying and managing environmental asthma triggers in the home.

NYRx Education & Outreach


We are excited to share a new resource available through NYRx (the Medicaid Pharmacy Program): NYRx Education & Outreach Call Center
 
The NYRx Education & Outreach Center serves as a liaison between prescribers, pharmacies, and managed care plans and the NYS Department of Health to support care coordination and provide training materials and resources. Their website offers recorded webinars for many of the NYRx programs, such as CoverMyMeds and Brand Less Than Generic, hosts weekly live training webinars, and publishes monthly newsletters.

Asthma and the Holidays


Have a wonderful, asthma-friendly holiday season!

NYSCAI hopes you all have a cheerful holiday season and a happy new year! While enjoying the holiday festivities, remember to keep these tips in mind so you can keep your asthma under control and have a safe and health holiday season: 
  • Protect yourself against respiratory viruses: As you celebrate with friends and family, protect yourself against respiratory viruses by washing your hands frequently and wearing a mask around those who may be sick.
  • Stay Warm: Cover your mouth and nose with a scarf or mask when going outside as cold, dry air can trigger asthma symptoms.
  • Avoid artificial holiday scents: Try to avoid strongly scented holiday decorations as they can cause an asthma flare-up.
  • Be careful with Christmas trees and decorations: Live trees can carry allergens like mold and pollen, and the strong pine fragrance can irritate some people's lungs. Additionally, artificial trees and ornaments can carry dust from storage. Make sure to shake out or rinse your live tree and clean artificial ones to remove any allergens.
  • Follow your asthma action plan: Always remember to follow your asthma action plan so you know what to do if you start to have asthma symptoms.
